For the Planet Member

Harney & Sons Tea Company sells fine teas at a price that makes tea an everyday luxury. Our tea is sipped around the world in homes, hotels, restaurants, cafes and on cruise ships. The process of shipping tea from the world’s tea gardens to Harney & Sons’ production facility for blending, bagging and packing, then on to the world’s teacups, impacts our increasingly fragile environment. What could we do to give back to the environment that grows the tea of the world?

Collective efforts to take care of our planet can lead to positive changes. In 2006, Michael and Paul Harney decided membership in 1% For The Planet allowing us to donate one percent of our total sales to the environmental organizations of our choice. It’s our way of giving back to the world, as we gather ingredients and transport to many homes, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and cruise ships across the globe.

Our production facility is located in Upstate New York surrounded by the beautiful mountains that make up the Berkshire Range. We are minutes from the Appalachian Trail. Our facility is located between the Hudson River to our west and the Housatonic River to our east. The Housatonic offers some of this country’s finest fly-fishing. Joining 1% for The Planet meant we could directly donate one percent of our total sales to the environmental organizations of our choice. We also pay annual membership dues to 1% For The Planet to help this exemplary organization defray its overhead costs. We encourage our business associates to visit their website: www.onepercentfortheplanet.org for more information.
The Harney family and staff are very proud to be part of this fine global organization working toward protection of the environment 1% at a time. As of the start of 2022 Harney & Sons (with your help) will have donated over 4 million dollars to 1% for the Planet. Through 1% for the Planet, we support the following non-profits:

Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to the preservation and management of Appalachian Trail (A.T.).

The A.T. is about 2,180 miles in length ranging from Maine to Georgia, making it one of the longest, continuous marked footpaths in the world. The ATC’s mission is to preserve and manage the Appalachian Trail – ensuring that its vast natural beauty and priceless cultural heritage can be shared and enjoyed today, tomorrow, and for centuries to come. Harney & Sons is proud to support the efforts of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The A.T. passes through Salisbury, Connecticut, the hometown of the Harney family and many of our employees as well. We're lucky to have such a treasure right in our backyards (for some of us, quite literally!) Michael fondly recalls many summers spent hiking the A.T. through The Presidentials in New Hampshire on the weekends, as part of summer training for Cross Country Ski Racing. Had he been even more ambitious, he could have hiked straight back to Salisbury, CT on the trail.

Through our partnership with Cloverly, we offer our customers the ability to offsetting the carbon footprint of each of their orders and their products. Click here to see where and how much carbon we've offset today, through your efforts!

Like everyone, we can do a better job working with our planet. So we will keep at it.
